RECOMMENDATIONS

"Julie is, without a doubt, one of North America's most knowledgeable, dynamic, and passionate advocates for women and children victimized by family violence. Her own personal life experience, combined with years of work in the field of domestic violence, have served to broaden her perspective on the many and various issues related to DV. I highly recommend her as a teacher, trainer, advocate, researcher or counselor."
– Dr. Barbara Fisher-Townsend, Sociology Instructor, University of New Brunswick

"It is a joy to provide an unconditional recommendation for Julie Owens.  I was Manager of the Injury Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) In the Hawai’i State Dept. of Health when I first started working with Julie, who helped me develop an IPCP effort focused on violence against women. Later, as Executive Director of the Hawai’i State Commission on the Status of Women, I continued to work with and tap Julie’s deep knowledge and experience.  I have had the wonderful opportunity to attend facilitated discussions and trainings conducted by Julie.  I have also had the great pleasure to conduct trainings with her.  She is an excellent communicator and trainer, demonstrating expertise with humility, humor, enthusiasm, and a high degree of professionalism.  She engages and informs an audience, increasing awareness and knowledge.  She would be a fantastic asset to any organization."

"Julie and I have served together on the board of Peace and Safety in the Christian Home (PASCH) for the last seven years. During that time I have seen Julie's dedication and commitment to assisting victims of domestic violence through her work for the state of N.C., her work at PASCH, and authoring articles on domestic violence.  She is also a top class speaker, engaging and extremely knowledgeable. I cannot imagine anyone who understands the area of domestic violence better than Julie, and who is able to apply this knowledge in real situations."
 – Victoria Fahlberg, Sports Psychology Consultant, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association

"I have not only had the pleasure of being educated by Julie at many conferences where she has skillfully and professionally taught on the effects of Domestic Abuse, but have also been fortunate to have had many one-on-one interactions with her as she has advised me on the best practices for our agency. Her expertise on the subjects of domestic violence, sexual assault and PTSD has been vital to the education of the advocates in our agency. Julie is an engaging public speaker and has been instrumental in helping our community understand the devastation of domestic assault."
– Rhonda Encinas, Executive Director, Priest River Ministries-Advocates for Women

"Julie is an invaluable asset to the Council for Women. As a minister, I have called on Julie several times and she is always available to provide assistance and information. She is a subject matter expert when it comes to dealing with Domestic Violence. Her resources are extensive, her passion is undeniable, and her pursuit for justice is relentless. Julie is a good person to know when you need help; and she is always there when it matters most."

"Julie's knowledge of domestic violence and issues related to this area are amazing. Her ability to help others and empower women speaks to the direct issues that women face in Domestic Violence. Julie is an awesome leader with a heart for hurting people.

"I saw Julie Owens speak at the NC NOW conference and she blew me away. I have always been a feminist, but the ideas and facts she was presenting were enlightening and even shocking. Her background and experiences are incredible and her ability to convey a very important message and to address the very heavy issues of domestic violence are astounding. She reached me and many others that day, and I can highly recommend Julie for speaking or training engagements."
– Melanie Wood, University Student Advisor

"Julie Owens spoke at the Conference “Making A Difference: A Faithful Response From Faith Leadership to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault” in Oklahoma City in May 2016. Ms. Owens represented Faithtrust Institute and presented a seminal three-hour presentation entitled “Domestic Violence: A Faithful Response,” which provided multi-faith faith leaders with the information needed to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. As Chair of the Planning Committee, I was very pleased and impressed. We received many positive comments from those who attended. In January, 2017, Ms. Owens was invited back to provide another three hour presentation for multi-faith leaders, this time using material she had personally developed. This taped presentation was comprehensive, well organized, and a superb teaching platform to educate faith leaders to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence. It reflected Ms. Owens’ comprehensive knowledge and experience and can be viewed on the following website: www.makingadifferenceconference.com. I highly recommend Ms. Owens as a presenter and educator for material related to a faithful response to domestic and sexual violence."
– Mari Fagin, PHD, Board Member, Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma

"Julie Owens has been a presenter at two of Legal Aid of NC’s annual conferences for attorneys, addressing issues concerning vicarious trauma and compassion fatique.  Her presentations were informative, interactive, and extremely well reviewed by the participants.  Participants learned how to better assist victims of trauma and, just as importantly, to take measures to protect themselves from compassion fatigue.  Julie is an excellent presenter and her experiences as a victim and advocate inform her training and make it relevant to all attendees."
– Rona Karacaova, JD, Battered Immigrant Project Coordinator, Legal Aid of NC

"Julie is a wealth of knowledge concerning violence against women and the impact on their lives and their families. She is recognized nationally as an authority - both as a speaker and a trainer on various aspects of violence against women and the resulting trauma. I would highly recommend Julie as a consultant, speaker, trainer. Miss working directly with her in NC."
– Kathleen Balogh, North Carolina Council for Women

"Julie Owens is an amazing trainer and speaker. She has the perfect combination of clinical, professional experience in the field of interpersonal violence along with the perspective of the victim/survivor. Her personal story is riveting and will increase your understanding of how a relationship begins to unravel in the face of speaking back to power and control. She has a multi-cultural, faith-based and international perspective on addressing violence in the home and is is able to tailor her information to her audience. She is collaborative, research-based, reflective, thoughtful, energetic and humorous in her presentations. Even if you think you know a great deal about this issue you will come away from her trainings with an increased understanding of the problem."
– Luana Nery, Human Services Professional, Vancouver, WA

"I had the pleasure of working with Julie Owens through the national office of United Methodist Women's Domestic Violence Initiative, on workshops around the U.S. to train church leaders to respond and appropriately to domestic violence. Domestic violence is an issue that is, sadly, very common within the local church but little to no training is provided for church leaders. Julie is a leading expert in the field and her ability to seamlessly combine her domestic violence knowledge with her personal experience as a survivor gives workshop participants the perfect opportunity to learn and then take away a plan of action tailored to the challenges of domestic violence within their communities. I have worked in the United Methodist Church and community education for nearly 15 years and Julie is one of the best facilitators I have had the pleasure of working with."
– Ashley Johnson, Director of Christian Education, Westminster United Methodist Church, Westminster, MD

"Julie Owens is a leading domestic violence expert, with almost 30 years of advocacy experience. Her expertise is focused on victim advocacy and advocacy training. She has been a mentor to me for the past five years during which I’ve founded and directed Shine a Light on Domestic Violence Ministry. We invited Julie to speak and train at our faith-based conference in 2013, the goal of which was to train persons working in the faith community to recognize the signs of domestic violence, then respond respectfully and refer those impacted by it to the expert resources. Julie MADE the event! Not only was she a key presenter, and essential for laying the ground work to help participants understand exactly what DV is, but she also connected me to all the other speakers who contributed to the event. The attendees learned about the complexities of DV, how to prioritize safety, the do’s and don’ts of good advocacy, and how to support victims of abuse. In 2015 Julie was invited to be the speaker for my employer, the Bank of America’s, annual Domestic violence Awareness event at corporate headquarters. Soon afterwards the corporation created a dedicated team to provide support to employees who are impacted by domestic violence. Bank of America then hired Julie to provide on-going consultation to the team and she has since become the organization’s leading DV advocacy trainer. She is knowledgeable, well connected, and an expert at what she does. Julie Owens is someone you NEED on your team!

"I serve on the Board of Directors for the Lincoln County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  I've had the privilege to participate in two different workshops Julie presented that were sponsored by United Methodist Women and FaithTrust Institute.  I have received thousands of hours of classroom lectures, and Julie's lectures are second to none. Her knowledge and presentation style creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. She seems to establish a relationship with each of her students very early in her class and delivers materials in a very comprehensible manner. Julie’s instructional methods are motivating and leave her students with an eagerness to learn and do more about the societal issue of Domestic Violence."
